The Ultimate Glebe Mural Walk

June 30, 2023 by theglebe

The Glebe has a beautiful array of murals painted by talented artists, and they’re all within walking distance of each other! Spend an afternoon this summer walking the neighbourhood admiring the art with the above mural map. This route will take approximately 30 minutes and will take you past all the beautiful murals in the Glebe, allowing time for stops at coffee shops, bakeries, or a meal if you’d like. If you have a bit more time on your hands and want a longer walk, we also have the extended route available which will take you all the way up to Pretoria Ave!

1: Our first stop is at Lansdowne Park, titled Peace Flowers by artist Tom Cech. Located in the pedestrian alley connecting Holmwood Ave and Marché Way, this private mural was commissioned by the Embassy of Belgium in Canada in 2021.

Alternate starting route: If you are coming from downtown Ottawa, or North Bank Street, you can begin at number 11 and do a reverse route instead, going down to 17, crossing the street and going back up to finish at number 10.

2: Next, you’ll see an untitled mural by Dominic Laporte at 915 Bank Street, located on the south facing wall of The Rowan restaurant.

3:
As you continue to walk down Bank Street, you’ll come across a beautiful floral mural painted by Daniel Martelock on the south facing wall of
Margarita at 895 Bank Street.

4:
Wild Growth by Roll Her Sleeves is our fourth stop. Attached to Wild Oat Bakery at 819 Bank Street, this mural is a great place to grab a baked good as a snack! Wild Oat offers delicious handmade pastries and goods including vegan, gluten-free, and fruit sweetened options!

5: Next up is Glebe’s Garden by Dan Metcalfe and Pat Buck. It’s located at 809 Bank Street, attached to The Good Cannabis Company.

6: Up next is

If you’re doing the regular route, then you can cross the street and skip right to number 13! If you decide to do the extended route, then continue down the street and head to number 9.

A New Mural Has Graced the Glebe: Pollinator Power by Emilie Darlington

June 23, 2023 by theglebe

The Glebe’s newest mural, “Pollinator Power”, by Emilie Darlington, is here! It’s located at the scenic corner of Bank Street and Patterson Avenue, next to Central Park East. This beautiful art piece features pollinator plants from the local area, including the Coneflower (Echinacea), Dense Blazing Star (Liatris), Zinnia, Windflower (Anemone), Geranium (Pelargonium), Nasturtium (Tropaeolum), and Dahlia. We would like to thank the City of Ottawa for funding this mural, and Bell Canada for allowing it to be placed on their electrical box.

Emilie’s Website: https://www.artworkbyemilie.com/
Social Media: @ArtworkByEmilie

Below is a Q&A with artist Emilie Darlington about her mural and inspiration behind the piece:

Question: How did you get into this career?

Amy Zambonin Photography – Emilie Darlington

Emilie: My whole life, I’ve been a big painter. I have a very supportive family that was really into the idea of me doing post-secondary fine arts, so I moved to Ottawa in Fall 2012 to start pursuing my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at the University of Ottawa. I graduated in 2016 with a painting specialisation and throughout my time there, I started painting larger and larger pieces over the years. I painted my first mural in 2019 for a beekeeping company called Apiverte, in Quebec, just over on the Gatineau side. In 2020, when everything was shut down, I really took the opportunity to promote myself as a muralist that could do this while social distancing, and that summer, things really took off. I painted my first three story mural,  I went to Niagara Falls. Now I do this full time, and I’m very passionate, lucky, and hardworking. It’s pretty great.

Q: What would you say inspires the art you create?

A: My biggest inspiration is definitely nature. Most of my murals feature vibrant plants and animals with a focus on domestic or local plant and wildlife. When I travel around to paint, I like to see what the local wildlife is like, whether it be at a park, pollinator garden, or any natural resources in the area.

Q: What inspired you to create a mural focused on pollinator-friendly flowers for the Glebe neighbourhood?

A: So I, of course, coming along with loving plants, also love pollinators and a lot of my murals focus on the domestics. I’m very familiar with local plant life and I thought that the power box created a good opportunity to have a play on words, so I titled the piece “Pollinator Power” to pay homage to the electrical box and that these plants are really what power the pollinators, that power us and our food.

Q: Were there any challenges in creating this mural?

A: Not too many challenges with this one. This is a very friendly, welcoming atmosphere. There’s shade, there’s lovely local businesses that have allowed me to catch a quick snack or break. It’s been great working with the Glebe BIA. Overall, I’ve had a really positive experience with this mural. I’m loving it so far.

Q: What is something you want people to take away from seeing this mural?

A: A lot of times, if you see something in a painting or mural,  all of a sudden, it’s on your radar and you’ll start noticing it in other places. I hope my work encourages people to plant other pollinator-friendly plants.

Come to Central Park East and see Pollinator Power in person!

Earth Day Cleanup in the Glebe

April 28, 2023 by theglebe

On Friday, April 21, the Glebe BIA, along with community volunteers, took to Bank Street to pick up its litter! In honour of Earth Day on Saturday, April 22, the Glebe BIA wanted to do something that would contribute to a cleaner and greener neighbourhood.

Cleaning the Capital is a City of Ottawa initiative that encourages community groups throughout Ottawa to participate in a city-wide cleanup every spring and fall. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Cleaning the Capital campaign, and it is estimated that over one million kilograms of waste have been removed by more than 1.4 million volunteers since the campaign began in 1994.

The Glebe BIA is incredibly grateful for the wonderful volunteers who participated in the cleanup this year! Five members of the Glebe Neighbourhood Activities Group came out and hit to the streets to pick up waste. After only one hour, our small group of eight volunteers were able to collect over nine bags of garbage – and this was just along Bank Street within Glebe borders!

One of our community partners, the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group, also participated in the Cleaning the Capital program on Friday, April 21. OSEG had a great turn out, with twenty staff members, six REDBLACKS players, and eight Waste Management staff participating in the cleanup. This group spread out to five different nearby locations and worked together to pick up litter. Thank you all!

As an organization, we hope to continue participating in this amazing initiative moving forward! Keeping our community clean and city beautiful is a civic responsibility we are happy to participate in, especially when it benefits the environment!

The Great Glebe Garage Sale Returns!

April 27, 2023 by theglebe

The Great Glebe Garage Sale returns to the neighbourhood on Saturday, May 27, 2023, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine!

Residents of the Glebe participate in one of North America’s largest garage sales, selling various items from their front lawns and driveways. Businesses along Bank Street join in on the fun and create pop-up booths to sell their goods. This collaboration between residents and businesses makes for a wonderful thrifting community in the Glebe!

The Great Glebe Garage Sale has been held in the Glebe since 1986, and since the very beginning, the Glebe Community Association has encouraged participants (residents, vendors, shoppers, businesses) to donate to the Ottawa Food Bank. This year is no different, and the community need is higher than ever. For every $1 donated, the Ottawa Food Bank can provide approximately $5 worth of food to the community.

You can make an online donation to the Ottawa Food Bank by clicking here. There will also be the opportunity to donate cash, cheque, or donations of non-perishable food items to the Ottawa Food Bank booth at the Great Glebe Garage Sale, which will be in front of McKeen Metro.

As the event draws near, we wanted to give you a friendly heads up that parking spaces will be very limited in the area. We kindly suggest considering alternative modes of transportation to make your way to the Glebe, such as hopping on your bike or taking public transit! OC Transpo Routes 6 and 7 can whisk you straight to the Glebe.

  • You can check out some scenic bike paths the City has to offer by visiting HERE
  • To view the bus Route 6 click HERE , and for the bus Route 7 click HERE

As for access to washrooms, public toilets will be available at various locations. You can find AODA porta-potties at the St. Matthew’s Church parking lot (217 First Avenue), and a standard porta-potty at Glebe Collegiate Institute (212 Glebe Avenue). Fourth Avenue Baptist Church has kindly made their toilets available to the public as well.

In this year’s edition of the event we are excited to announce that over 28 local businesses will be participating in the Sidewalk Sale,  including some fan favourites such as Magpie, Cantina Gia, Bloomfields, Compact Music, JD Adam, Joe Mamma Cycles,  Top of the World,  and many more! So, come on down to the Glebe and check-out all the amazing sales its residents and businesses alike have to offer!

For more information on the Great Glebe Garage Sale, please visit the Glebe Community Association website here.
