Associate Membership
The Glebe BIA is a not-for-profit organization, financed by a levy on each property owner in the Glebe BIA as determined by geographic location within the boundary designated by the City of Ottawa. Currently the Glebe BIA membership is comprised of approximately 400 businesses and property owners.
If a business does not have a brick and mortar business in the BIA district but does have an eligible registered business within the Associate Member district, there is an opportunity for an associate membership. This is a voluntary paid membership that receives support and services from the BIA, with some limitations.
Benefits
As an Associate Member of the Glebe BIA, your business gains increased visibility, access to resources and opportunities to connect with the local business community.
Your business will be listed in the online directory, receive regular communications, and can share updates, events and promotions through BIA channels, including social media.
Associate Membership also offers opportunities to participate in marketing campaigns, events and sponsorships, attend the Annual General Meeting, and stay informed about local developments, initiatives and issues affecting the Glebe.
Limitations
Associate Membership does not include access to property or streetscape improvements that are specific to the commercial areas of the Glebe BIA district. These may include beautification programmes, hanging flower baskets, street pole banners, murals, holiday décor and similar initiatives.
You will also not eligible for grants or programmes designed specifically for main streets or for businesses located within the BIA’s commercial boundaries.
Associate Membership does not include voting rights, including the right to vote at the Annual General Meeting.
Boundary Map
Businesses wishing to join the BIA as an associate member require approval from the Board of Directors. The Board reserves the right to deny any applicant who does not meet the membership requirements. Applicants for associate memberships must be legal, permit holding operations, existing outside the delineated BIA boundary, and within the following boundaries:
• Isabella St. and Chamberlain Ave to the north
• Bronson Ave to the west
• Queen Elizabeth Dr to the east, and
• Wilton Cres to the south
Membership, Responsibilities and Approval
Associate members are required to maintain payment of annual membership fees and application renewals. Failure to remit membership fees will result in removal of benefits and a loss of membership. Members who maintain good standing can attend the Annual General Meeting but are not eligible to be voting members. Renewal of membership is neither automatic nor guaranteed. Renewal is at the Board’s discretion, regardless of length of membership.
Associate membership fees are set by the Board of Directors and are reviewed annually. Fees are to be paid in full annually. Membership fees are $500 (+HST) for a calendar year (January to December) and will be prorated for a partial year. This fee is subject to change.
If you operate a home-based business, you must comply with the City of Ottawa’s applicable Home-Based Business by-law requirements to be eligible for Associate Membership. Applicants are responsible for ensuring their business is permitted and operates in accordance with all applicable City of Ottawa regulations.
Eligible businesses abide by the rules set out in the City of Ottawa’s Home-Based Business Provisions zoning_bylaw_part5_section127_en.pdf and have a business registration number or municipal business license as applicable.
