SUMMARY:Something Rotten! Musical Theatre
DESCRIPTION:GNAG Community Theatre is thrilled to present Something Rotten! \nTheatre is always a risky business. Shakespeare is a rockstar. Literally. And his rivals? Two struggling playwrights who are desperate for a hit until a slightly offbeat soothsayer predicts the future of theatre: Tragedy with singing! Comedy with dancing! Wait… what? A musical? A show set in the 1590s with the energy\, comedy\, and music of the 21st century! \nSomething Rotten! is a laugh-out-loud mashup of Elizabethan costume drama\, Broadway razzle-dazzle\, and Monty Python-style madness — with a joyful shuffle-step through Annie\, Jesus Christ Superstar\, and all your favourite musicals. \nStratford is also putting on Something Rotten! this year after only having produced it in 2024. Stratford almost never repeats a play this quickly but clearly it’s because it’s an amazingly funny and clever show. But you could see it here first!\n\nChild (under 12 years): $28+ ticketing fees\nAdult: $38+ ticketing fees\nStudent (12+) / Senior (65 +): $33+ ticketing fees\n\nThis musical is PG-13 — There are lots of jokes that are double entendre that will be picked up by grown-ups\, but not by children. It’s bawdy but not rated R\, just the jokes are on a more adult level\, so it won’t be nearly as funny for kids. \nShow Dates & Times\nTues\, April 14 – 7:00 PM — preview\nWed\, April 15 – 7:00 PM\nThurs\, April 16 – 7:00 PM\nFri\, April 17 – 7:00 PM\nSat\, April 18 – 2:00 PM\nSat\, April 18 – 7:00 PM\nSun\, April 19 – 2:00 PM\nSun\, April 19 – 7:00 PM \nReviews for Something Rotten! 🍅\nIt’s so very bad\, it’s gotta be so good. \n“Breathlessly funny”\n– The New York Times \n“The hit of the summer”\n– Chicago Tribune \n“The smartest and funniest new musical comedy since The Book of Mormon.”\n– Toronto Star \nJoin Director Eleanor Crowder\, Music Director Lauren Saindon\, and Choreographer Mary Tsai for another amazing community theatre production.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: Cancelling Billionaires Before They Cancel Us
DESCRIPTION:Join Octopus Books to celebrate the launch of Cancelling Billionaires Before They Cancel Us with co-authors Linda McQuaig and Neil Brooks\, a jarring portrait of a deeply unequal Canada and how a wealth tax could rein in the destructive power wielded by today’s billionaires. \nWednesday April 22\, 6:30pm – 8:30pm\nAbbotsford House\, 950 Bank St. \nAs the ultra-wealthy siphon off an ever-larger share of the world’s wealth\, they now dominate us to a degree unimaginable even a decade ago. With their voracious consumption\, unbridled resource exploitation\, and relentless obstruction of climate action\, they are rapidly undermining democracy and destroying the very viability of the earth for human life. \nTheir staggering power and hoarding of wealth have prompted a number of G20 nations to consider imposing a wealth tax\, aimed exclusively at the super-rich. In Canada\, such a tax would apply only to those with wealth above $25 million. Yet it could collect $40 billion a year — funding public programs that could immensely improve the lives of millions of Canadians while clipping the wings of the super-rich. \nBillionaires would threaten to depart. But as they left the country that had nourished them and enabled them to grow so wildly rich\, they’d face a hefty “exit tax” on the way out. \nYes\, change is possible. \nLinda McQuaig is the recipient of a National Newspaper Award for investigative reporting. The National Post has described her as “Canada’s Michael Moore.” She is also the author of eight national bestsellers\, including Shooting the Hippo\, selected by the Literary Review of Canada as one of the twenty-five most influential books of the past twenty-five years. Perhaps not surprisingly\, she has enraged many on the right\, including Conrad Black\, who called for her to be “horsewhipped.” \nNeil Brooks taught tax law and policy at Osgoode Hall Law School for over 35 years. He has published extensively on income tax issues and was the editor of Canadian Taxation\, Osgoode Hall Law Journal and the Canadian Tax Journal. He is the co-author of The Trouble with Billionaires (2010) with Linda McQuaig. \nThis event is free and open to all. Please RSVP to help us know how many guests to expect: octopusbooks.ca/wealthtax

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Saying Goodbye: Preparing for Death
DESCRIPTION:The When You Die Project is pleased to screen the second chapter in the When You Die documentary trilogy in partnership with the second annual Legacy Expo\, and sponsored in kind by Amica – The Glebe Senior Lifestyles. Following the screening there will be a Q&A and discussion with light refreshments\, giving you a chance to learn\, reflect\, and share your thoughts in a relaxed setting. Whether you’re curious or seeking comfort\, this event offers a supportive space to connect and prepare together. \nSaying Goodbye: Preparing for Death\nHow can we talk about death? What is a good death? Does the body need help to die? What quality of life is enough for us? Where do we want to die? What is a conscious death? Could we have one? \nThrough stories from professionals who have spent their careers at the bedside\, “Saying Goodbye” opens the door to good conversations about what is possible as we pass from this life\, and what that may look like for us and our loved ones. Exploring what happens after death not only helps us decide how we want to be cared for at the end of life\, but it reduces our fear of death and that\, as is often said\, helps us live more fully. \nExperts featured in the documentary: \nRev. David Maginley\, M.Div; Rev. Olivia Bareham; Dr. Ann Marie Chiasson\, MD; Julie McFadden\, RN; Dr. Penny Sartori\, PhD; Dr. Peter Fenwick\, MD; Sue Brayne\, MA; Dr. Anthony Bossis\, PhD; Dr. Andrew Holecek\, DDS; Jill Schock\, MTS; Dr. Laurie Mallery\, MD; Dr. Paige Moorhouse\, MD. \n  \n\nDoors open at 1:30pm.\nScreening starts at 1:45pm.\n2nd Floor Theatre Room at Amica – The Glebe Senior Lifestyles\n\n  \nThe When You Die Project:\nThe When You Die Project exists to explore what might happen when we die\, and to open thoughtful\, honest conversations about death — a cultural dialogue too often avoided. The When You Die Team believes talking about death isn’t dangerous; but in fact\, it can nurture healthier individuals and families who approach the end of life informed\, inspired\, and even with a sense of humor. By approaching the topic of dying with curiosity rather than fear\, and compassion rather than silence\, we help return death to its rightful place as a natural part of life. When we demystify the dying process\, we create the conditions for a more conscious and meaningful end — and often\, a more intentional way of living. The When You Die Project is an educational resource website\, a podcast host\, the home to an engaged online community via social media\, but ultimately at the heart of the project is a documentary trilogy about what happens when we die.
