Weekend What’s up: Santa Parade, REDBLACKS Playoffs, Latin Expo in the Glebe
Santa Claus is coming to the Glebe this weekend – and you’re all invited to kick off the holiday season in the neighbourhood.
The Glebe will be full of holiday spirit this weekend, as the big jolly man and his elves head down Bank Street for the Help Santa Toy Parade Saturday afternoon.
It all kicks off at City Hall at 11 a.m. before heading down Bank Street and culminating at Lansdowne Park around 2 p.m. The event typically draws tens of thousands of spectators hoping to catch an early glimpse of Santa before he readies his sled for delivering toys on Christmas Day. So, come early, and pick your spot along Bank Street to watch scores of holiday floats coast through the Glebe. Santa will also be collecting donated toys along the parade route to be packaged up for the less fortunate. Click here for more information on this weekend’s parade.
But Saturday’s parade is just a snowflake in the flurry of activities to take in this weekend in the Glebe, as there is everything from a rivalry hockey game for the ages, a DJ skate night and the Ottawa REDBLACKS win-or-go-home game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for the CFL’s East Championship.
It all kicks off Thursday, as new insurance agent Vivian Yau is hosting a meet & greet at her Bank Street office all day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The day will feature free cake, refreshments and giveaways. Click here for more information.
Kicking off Friday is the GNAG Fall Craft and Artisan Fair where more than 50 local artisans will be showcasing their unique goods – everything from jewellery and homemade soaps to clothing and art. The fair runs Friday from 6- 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Glebe Community Centre. Click here for more information.
Friday night is rivalry night at The Arena at TD Place, as the Ottawa Gee Gees and Carleton Ravens hockey teams battle it out of O-town supremacy in the Colonel By Classic. The Gee Gees are the heavy favourites in this one, as the first place squad has not lost a game in regulation this season and sits with a 9-0-1 record. They’re also on a five-game winning streak. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. Click here for tickets.
After following the parade route to Lansdowne, just continue walking straight into the Aberdeen Pavilion, as the city’s favourite flea market, 613 Flea is taking over the space for its monthly marketplace. Browse vintage goods, comic books, records and artisan gifts just in time for the holidays. The flea market runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Click here for details.
And by Saturday night, the party will just be getting started. TD Place is hosting, “Ottawa’s Hottest Party on Ice” with its DJ Skate night inside the arena. The retro skate night is perfect for teens, families or couples on a date night. Skate around the arena with beats from a live DJ, food, drinks, prizes and giveaways. The DJ Skate night runs from 7-11 p.m. Click here to hit the ice.
On Sunday, it’s win-or-die for the Ottawa REDBLACKS – and if they want another crack at winning the Grey Cup, they’ll need to rip through the Hamilton Tiger-Cats first. It’s the CFL East Final at TD Place Sunday afternoon and the winner takes on either the Calgary Stampeders or the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The REDBLACKS are a perfect 3-0 against the Tiger-Cats, but the tabbies will likely show up with fire in their belly as they look to prove that they are the class of the east. Kick off is at 1 p.m. Click here for tickets.
Before the game, head to the Aberdeen Pavilion for the Ottawa Farmers’ Indoor Market, the city’s only year-round, producer-only Farmers’ Market. Score your favourite local grains, meats, cheeses, fruits and veggies, locally produced baked goods and sweets, as well as exceptional artisan crafts and jewellery. Click here for details.
Sunday also features the 6th annual Latin Expo 2018 inside the Horticulture Building from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Take in art, fashion and Latin cuisine throughout the day, while also getting some unique Christmas gifts for that special someone in your life. Click here for more information.
We’ll see you in the Glebe.
