A wallop of a weekend in the Glebe
It would be a good thing if you haven’t got any plans this weekend, and if you do, start making cancellations asap, as you’ll want to spend the entire weekend here in the Glebe.
There are a plethora of events happening in the neighbourhood from Thursday through Sunday, with truly a little something for everyone in your family. Whether you’re a bargain hunter, a sports fan, a fashion freak, or a food lover, you’ll find more than enough activities to keep your weekend going in the Glebe.
Here’s a rundown of what’s happening in one of Ottawa’s great downtown urban neighbourhoods. Break out your calendar, you’re gonna need it.
It all starts with some rugby at TD Place Thursday night with the Gladiateurs de L’Outaouais taking on The Ottawa Beavers and Banshees RFC for the annual River Rivalry. The pre-season tilt kicks off at 6 p.m. with both the men’s and women’s teams taking to the field. Friends and families are invited out to catch some high-level action, and to learn more about Ottawa’s booming rugby scene. Click here for more information.
It’s time to do your little turn on the catwalk and show the world your best blue steel. It’s fashion Friday in the Glebe, as the Sustainable Fashion Showcase is back with a wallop of a show Friday night at the Glebe Community Centre. Enjoy a funky fashion show, live entertainment, refreshments, and a small shopping marketplace featuring a curated collection of vintage and second-hand designer merch. The runway gets cooking at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25. Click here for more info.
How much do you know about your own neighbourhood? What do you know about the history of the Lansdowne? Find out this Saturday during The New Lansdowne walk as part of the city-wide Jane’s Walk. Strollers will tour Lansdowne Park, the new TD Place Stadium and the urban village. Click here for route information.
Calling all bargain hunters! The Aberdeen Pavilion at Lansdowne will be transformed into a giant flea market Saturday, as 613 holds its monthly marketplace from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The not-for-profit marketplace features artisans, designers, makers and antique dealers in a giant, one-stop marketplace that has everything you’re looking for and more. Comic books, hot sauce, vintage clothing, ceramics and other eclectic goods. Start digging. Click here to learn more.
Goooooaaaaal! TD Place will be bustling with soccer players this weekend, as the Neymar Jr.’s 5 will hit the pitch all day Saturday for a 5-on-5 tournament. Registration is still open for all players between the ages of 16 and 25, both men and women. The intense tournament will be fast and technical, with a fun catch: every time your team gets scored on, you lose a player. Can your squad outlast them all? The winner of this regional qualifier will move on to the National Final, and potentially, the world final in Brazil on July 21. Have you got what it takes? The event is also free to the public, so come out and watch Ottawa’s young soccer stars duke it out. Click here for registration details.
Looking to kick off your Sunday with a workout? Head to TD Place Stadium at 8 a.m. for a free one-hour workout courtesy of GoodLife Fitness Club. They’ll have you running stairs, doing pushes and crunches and lunges that will make you feel the burn. Show up at the front desk at GoodLife around 7:50 and you’ll be on your way to having a beach bod in no time. Click here for information.
The Ottawa Farmers’ Market is finally heading outside! That’s right, this Sunday will be the first outdoor market of the season. While it’s early in the growing season, you’ll still be able to get asparagus, green and yellow beans, herbs, mushrooms and onions, among other goods. The market opens every Sunday in the Aberdeen Square from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Click here for more.
Now you’re weekend is booked. We’ll see you in the Glebe.
