Victoria Day in the Glebe
The sky will be on fire with tulips come Sunday in the Glebe.
Grab a lawn chair, a blanket and your children for an explosive show in the sky right here in the Glebe, and yes, it will be loud.
Cozy up on the turf at TD Place stadium and watch it all get lit.
Tickets are $20 with gates opening at 7 p.m. The fireworks will start to fly at dusk, likely around 9 p.m.
But this is the end of the weekend, there is so much going on in the Glebe for the Victoria Day long weekend, it’ll be difficult to squeeze in much shut eye, or Saturday morning cartoons.
It all starts Friday morning when the Ottawa Welcomes the World series hosts the Republic of Cuba for a day long celebration of Cuban culture. Join famous Cuban guitarist Aldo Rodrigue and the Hillcrest High School Band for a day of Cuban tunes, old an new. Get moving with Jose Carret’s salsa dance class, or let your kids take part in the interactive percussion band. Doors open at 10 a.m.
To keep you moving, the Canadian Tulip Festival is hosting a Swing Dance Night inside the Aberdeen Pavillion Friday night at 7:30 p.m. Twist and shout the night away with the Snippets Sextet. But don’t worry, if you don’t know how to do the Charleston or the Lindy Lop, there will be a one-hour beginner lesson before the party gets all neat.
Dancers are encouraged to wear WWII period attire. Tickets are $15.
Ottawa Welcomes the World returns Saturday night when the Republic of Guyana show off their culture inside the Horticulture Building from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Expect Guyanes food, arts, crafts and interactive games for kids, including Anansi storytelling and cultural performances throughout the day. Ottawa Welcomes the World events are always free.
And the series continues Victoria Day Monday when the Republic of Serbia hosts its national party.
And while you’re in the Glebe on Victoria Day, take some shopping bags down Bank Street and beyond, as many shops and restaurants will be open during the holiday. Aside from restaurants, here is a list of retailers who will be open on Victoria Day:
