Tulip Festival is here in the Glebe
If you’ve been strolling through the Glebe lately, you might be wondering what all those giant fiberglass tulips sitting outside of Scotiabank are all about.
The symbolism is quite literal, as Bank Street will be lined with 10 of the five-foot sculptures to help celebrate the 2018 edition of the Canadian Tulip Festival, kicking off May 11-21 throughout the city and in the Glebe.
A team of artists will descend on the Glebe this weekend to paint the tulips in vivid colours and intricate designs to add even more vibrancy to the colourful festival.
But the live painting aspect is just one facet of the nearly two-week festival, as there are a plethora of Tulip Festival events in the area – everything from tulip tours to a special Mother’s Day brunch at Lansdowne Park.
It all kicks off May 11 at Lansdowne Park with the official Tulip Festival Opening Ceremony at 10 a.m. where the Tulip Festival’s board of directors, government partners and dignitaries will officially open the 66th edition of the festival under the theme, “A World of Tulips.”
Stick around for A Bouquet of Stories from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. where attendees can hear brightly coloured stories about tulips and tour the tulip garden inside the Aberdeen Pavilion. While you’re there, check out the Lansdowne Park Tulip gallery, which is open everyday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the festival.
Tulip lovers can also take the free Tulip Trail around Lansdowne Park or at Commissioner’s Park at Dow’s Lake between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Friday. The Lansdowne site will also feature a photo exhibit, a Children’s World of Tulips Art Wall and the Tulip Family Fun Zone, which boasts an Amazing Race Challenge, Tulip Arts & Crafts, button-making stations and a puppet show. The fun zone is open everyday during the festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Click here for details and event times.
Friday night will also see a Tulip Art Exhibit, a Vintage Automobile Display and the 3rd Annual Tulip Festival Swing Dance inside the Horticulture Building. Tickets for the dance are $25 at the door. Click here for more details.
Saturday boasts a slew of events from photo exhibits to the Dance With Us Tulip Soiree in the evening. The day also features free live performances at the Tulip Friendship Stage, along with scores of other events to keep you busy.
Saturday will also feature an Ottawa Fury FC match at 2 p.m., as they take on Atlanta United on the pitch at TD Place. Your Fury FC game day ticket will also get you into all Tulip Festival events for free. You can expect some tulip surprises at the game, and you’ll have the chance to win a VIP box for an upcoming Fury game and Airfare for two to travel and tickets and accommodation to one of six world famous tulip festivals. Click here for tickets to the game.
Saturday is Mother’s Day, and you’ll want to bring that special matriarch to the Glebe for a special Mother’s Day brunch inside the Aberdeen Pavilion. You’ll be treated to a gourmet brunch buffet while listening to live jazz among the tulips. Click here for tickets, they’re going just as fast as the pancakes did last year. Sunday will also boast repeat activations including the Friendship Stage, the Family Fun Zone and the Lansdowne Tulip Gallery.
So, come down to where the tulips are blooming. Tune in next week, as we highlight Week 2 of the festival, which features the Vernissage Tulip, the Get Your Spring On Painting Workshop and the Petal Pedal Tulip Party with the Peptides.
