Now that summer’s in full swing, check out the Great Glebe Summer Bucket List! A list of 16 must-do  activities to make the most out of summer. Find a variety of activities that’ll be a blast for the whole family! From picnics to sports games, this list will be sure to keep the family busy right up to Labour Day. It’s time to take full advantage of the summer sunshine and make it the best summer yet!

  1. Try something new at the Ottawa Farmer’s Market

You’ll find the Ottawa Farmer’s Market at the base of the stunning Aberdeen Pavilion every Sunday, rain or shine. Take your pick from a variety of freshly baked goods, sweets, produce and artisan crafts. All the vendors grow, make and bake everything that they offer within 100 kilometers of the City of Ottawa!

  1. Plan a family dinner at a new restaurant

With over 60 places to get your fill in the Glebe, there’s no shortage of new spots to dine. Expect to find a wide variety of cuisines including Mexican, Mediterranean, Lebanese, Indian, Italian and more. Gather your family and pick a restaurant that you haven’t tried yet. For inspiration, check out this list of places to dine in the neighbourhood.

  1. Enjoy a scoop of ice cream on a hot day

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! Nothing says summer like a frosty treat on a hot day. Get creative at Marble Slab by choosing from over 50 ice cream flavours and loading it up with unlimited mix-ins. They even bake and hand-roll their waffle cones in-store. If you’re in the mood for gelato, drop by Pure Gelato where they use traditional artisan recipes and import ingredients from Italy.

  1. Have a picnic at Patterson Creek

Pack the ultimate picnic basket by stocking up on snacks from the local grocers in the neighborhood, then head over to Patterson Creek. This scenic spot looks out onto both the water and park. In summer months, you’ll also be able to find a floating dock, perfect for a picnic!

  1. Make a new friend at the Lansdowne jungle gym

Enjoy a day of play at Lansdowne Park! The colourful play structure features a massive rope structure and is the perfect place for kids to meet a new friend. The play structure is also fully accessible. Challenge your new friend to a climb and race down the slide!

  1. Cheer for your favourite team at TD Place

Pull on your jersey and cheer on your favourite team! The TD Place Stadium and Arena is home to the Grey Cup winning-Ottawa REDBLACKS football team, Fury FC soccer team and 67s OHL hockey team. Check out the Events page to find out when the next home game is scheduled. While the Ottawa 67s are taking their summer break, the REDBLACKS and Fury are in the peak of their season.

  1. Catch a movie on the big screen

Fun for the whole family! Grab your favourite must-have movie snack (ours is still the classic bag of warm, buttery popcorn) and catch the latest Hollywood film releases at Cineplex. For the month of July we recommend checking out new releases Toy Story 4 and The Lion King. You can also watch a movie under the stars on the Great Lawn. The Outdoor Movie Nights are free and feature family-friendly flicks. Grab a blanket and get comfy! Showing in the next week is Ever After, The Greatest Showman and Paddington 2.   1. Try a new flavor of pizza

What’s the craziest ingredient you’ve ever had on pizza? Have everyone come up with their idea of a perfect pizza, and then vote for the one that sounds the most delicious! The next challenge will be deciding where to order from – there are lots of spots to enjoy a piece of pie in the Glebe, including Anthony’s, Boston Pizza, Crust & Crate, Industria, Isabella Pizza, Pizza Hut, Pizza Pizza, and Yummy Pies.

  1. Cool off at the Lansdowne splash pad

Beat the heat and get wet at the Lansdowne splash pad. The splash pad has 55 water jets that will keep you guessing about who will get wet next! Lather up the family in sunscreen, slide on a funky swimsuit, rock your favourite shades and cool off.

  1. Go for a bike ride along the Canal

Take in the beautiful scenery along the Rideau Canal, on two wheels. The Rideau Canal offers fun and entertainment year-round! The world’s largest outdoor skating rink becomes a popular spot for paddlers, boaters, runners and bikers in the summer. If you’re looking for a spot to cross the Canal, check out the new, state-of-the-art Flora Footbridge that connects Old Ottawa East and the Glebe!

  1. Roll down the hill at Lansdowne

The simplest form of fun – perfect for kids and the young at heart! All you need is a hill with a gentle slope and a friend. Run to the top of the hill at Lansdowne by the Moving Surfaces art sculpture and down you go. Make sure to look before you roll and be sure to wear some play clothes – you’ll be sure to get some grass stains!

  1. Organize a scavenger hunt

Have kids start by drawing their own map of the neighborhood and marking their favourite spots. This list of local attractions can help get them started. Next, create clues that lead players to each spot. Gather some friends and let the hunt begin!

  1. Spot the murals in the neighborhood

Take a walking art tour of the murals in the Glebe. How many murals can you find? Don’t forget to look up occasionally! Did you know that the Glebe is home to the only mural in Canada that is part of the Colombian Collective Vertigo Graffiti project, an international group that is painting murals around the world? To find it, look out for an eye-grabbing painting depicting a mythical bison reading over the shoulder of a child in a grassy field.

  1. Shoot some hoops at the Lansdowne courts

Following the excitement of the Raptors’ NBA Championship, get inspired by channeling your favourite basketball star. Gather some friends to shoot some hoops at the Lansdowne courts behind the Aberdeen Pavilion.

  1. Build toy boats and race them at Brown’s Inlet

Make it a family challenge! We recommend checking your recycling to find some useful materials. Get creative with your design and decorate as you see fit! Pick a fun name for your ship and get ready to set sail. Brown’s Inlet is the perfect spot for a toy boat race. You might even spot some wildlife including frogs, turtles, fish and birds.

  1. Organize the biggest game of tag on the Great Lawn

The Great Lawn is the perfect location for a massive game of tag! Invite friends, siblings, mom and dad, to join a huge game of tag. The wide space of the Great Lawn will make for an exciting game with lots of room to chase and roam. If you want to up the stakes, have a prize ready for the winner! Ready, set, go!
