Six things to help you Bike to Work this month in the Glebe
There are several reasons to bike to work this month. Aside from the fact that May is Bike to Work Month in Canada, you’ll be saving the environment, getting in shape and saving some serious bucks on gas. If that’s not enough to get you out of your car and onto two wheels, perhaps the $10,000 worth of prizes will get your rolling into work.
The City has partnered with EnviroCentre to launch Bike to Work Ottawa – the region’s commuter tracker that will keep tabs on how often – and how far you bike to work each day. So far, there are over 3,000 commuters signed up – and they’re logging some serious miles for some serious prizes – including a brand new E-bike worth $2,500 from Pedal Easy.
The campaign is simple. All you need to do is sign up here, then start or join a workplace team, or as an individual. Once you’re all set up, you can log your bike commutes throughout May, track your progress and see the positive impact you are making on the community. Bike to Work will even calculate how much money you are saving and how much pollution you are averting through your work commutes. Bike to Work will conduct random draws throughout the month for prizes including bike helmets, lights, concert tickets, riding gloves and so much more.
To help you get your bike to commuting shape, we enlisted the help of three local bike shops to get you up and rolling this month. Here are six products to help you Bike to Work in May.
Serfas bike lights from Joe Mamma Cycles
If you’re a serious commuter, you’ll want to stop off at Joe Mamma to let owner Jose Bray set you up right. He’s got a suite of Serfas bike lights that will keep you seen on the road. From bright, 1200 Lumens lights to 70 lumens taillights, a trip to Joe Mamma will make sure that you get to and from work in one piece. Click here for more on Joe Mamma Cycles.
A Bell, water bottle cage and wheel reflectors from Joe Mamma Cycles
One of the most important things while commuting on your bike is being seen and heard. Pick up a Basil bike bell to ensure that those in front of you can hear you coming. Couple the bell with some FLECTR Wheel Reflector stickers so cars can spot you on the road if you’re working the late shift. Toss in a new water bottle cage to remain hydrated throughout your commute.
Blackburn commuter pannier from Kunstadt Sports
If you’re going to be riding to work all month, you’ll need something to carry your laptop, lunch and those important business papers you keep in your briefcase. Kunstadt Sports has you covered with the Blackburn 1,220 cubic inch waterproof pannier. The bag has a welded seam construction and a roll top design that seals out the elements. The bag also features reflective print for better visibility.
Evo Classic Rear Rack from Kunstadt Sports
If you’ve picked up that Blackburn pannier, you’re going to need a rack to secure it to. Luckily, Kunstadt Sports has a number of racks in a variety of styles and colours, including this slick black classic rear rack from Evo. The rack will hold up to 40 lbs of weight, for that diorama you’re bringing to work for a presentation, or to help carry the lunch that you’re supplying for the whole company.
