How fast can a pumpkin go down a hill?

That’s really up to you.

Designers in the Glebe are gearing up for the first annual Lansdowne Pumpkin Derby this weekend, where racers will send their big orange pumpkin cars down a hill in a spooky race to the finish line.

Builders are likely scouring their garages and basements, looking for old tricycle and bike tires, axels and steering wheels to keep their pumpkins solid and rolling. Others will be digging through old trunks in search of Halloween decorations to dress up their pumpkin.

There are prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place racers and also a prize for the “Most Spectacular Pumpkin Car Crash.” If you’re sending your pumpkin down the hill, don’t forget to dress up, as the best dressed ‘driver’ will also receive a prize. And even if your racer doesn’t beat the others to the finish line, if it looks good, you could still win a prize.

The derby gets underway at 10 a.m. Halloween morning at Lansdowne Park, where there will be a pumpkin car showcase, a pumpkin car building bootcamp, kids’ games and more.

Prizes include kids and adult haircuts courtesy Silver Scissors Salon, Kunstadt water bottle and gift certificates, gift certificates from Local, free family tune-ups from Joe Mamma Cycles, a mystery bag from Miss Tiggy Winkles and free breakfasts at the Flapjacks Pancake Shack, among other prizes.
