Ottawa Christmas Market set to blanket Glebe in festive fun
The forecast in the Glebe is calling for a whole lot of snow, with a mix of festive fun and cinnamon gusts up to 80 km/hour.
No, it’s not a major winter storm, but the Ottawa Christmas Market is set to blanket the neighbourhood with jolly cheer beginning Friday with the ceremonial tree lighting in front of the Aberdeen Pavilion.
The fourth-annual tree lighting ceremony has become a tradition in itself, with thousands packing Lansdowne Park for the stunning spectacle. It’s a magical night with the magnificent 60-foot tree illuminating the entire site for Christmas shoppers.
“Experience the sights, sounds, scents and tastes of an authentic European Christmas Market,” said OSEG CEO Mark Goudie. “It’s a festival of lights, music, local artisans with unique Christmas gift ideas, bakers of holiday treats, mulled wine and other holiday treats. It’s going to be great.”
Attendees can take in the tree-lighting ceremony, then wander through the European-style market to shop for unique gifts from over 20 local merchants. There will be mulled wine, beer, hot cider and cocoa and a range of gifts to cross off your list. Glebe merchants include Jack Astor’s, Sunset Grill and Alicja Confections.
We’ll create a Christmas village of 16 cabins from which the artisans will sell their wares,” added Goudie. “We’ll have live musical performances and, if we’re lucky, Santa Clause might drop-by.”
The Market runs Fridays from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in December. The final market day is Sunday, December 22.
Ans OSEG is pulling out all the stops when it comes to musical programming. Canadian icon Chantal Kreviazuk will open the market on Nov. 29 along with local jazz cat Megan Jerome before a solid roster of locals serenade us through December. There are 22 performances in December with artists like Danielle Allard, Rebecca Noelle, Shawn Tavanier and a Leverage for Mountains. Click here for the full musical lineup. Kreviazuk will be crooning tunes from her latest and first Christmas album, Christmas is a Way of Life.”
The market launch kicks off at 6 p.m. in front of the Aberdeen Pavilion. Ho, ho, ho! Click here for the full schedule and event details.
