The Glebe at a Glance: January 2020
There’s no better way to start off the New Year than with a month of exciting events – and in the Glebe, you’ll be able to explore the neighbourhood through your taste buds, your cheering holler, your dancing shoes and your blades through the month of January.
The month all kicks off with New Year’s celebrations in the Glebe Dec. 31. Kicking off a family-friendly Scottish New Years is the Ottawa Scottish Society with their annual Hogman-Eh! bash at the Aberdeen Pavilion. From 5 p.m. to midnight, experience the biggest celebration of the OttScot Festival and the largest Homanay event outside of Scotland. The night features kids’ activities, live music and performances and traditional Scottish fare. At 7 p.m. revelers will celebrate midnight in Scotland with a massive balloon drop. End the night with a toast to 2020 and gather outside on the Great Lawn for a dazzling fireworks spectacle at midnight. The event is free for everyone and kicks off at 5 p.m. at the Aberdeen Pavilion. Click here for details.
If you’re looking for something a bit more raucous for NYE, head to CRAFT Beer Market for their annual New Year’s Eve party. Eat your way through and exclusive menu crafted by the restaurant’s executive chef, paired by a selected list of wine and beer pairings. Live DJs will provide the soundtrack for a late-night dance party. Dinner and Dance Party tickets are $70, or $20 for the party time. Click here for details.
But before you head out to ring in the New Year, strap on your skates and take the family for a holiday skate at the Arena at TD Place. The final two skates are December 31 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. and on January 3 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The skates are free for everyone. Children under 10 must wear a helmet. Click here for more details.
Once you’ve rung in the New Year, it’s time to get back to routine and your Ottawa 67’s are the perfect recipe for getting back to your winning ways. The team is on a hot streak for the ages, winning their last 13 consecutive games, which helped them squeeze into first place in the OHL. They take on Kingston January 2 and then on January 5, it’s the team’s annual Teddy Bear Toss Game at TD Place. The 67’s also take on Guelph January 10, Owen Sound on January 12, January 17 vs. Flint, January 17 vs. Hamilton, January 25 vs. Niagara and January 26 vs. Saginaw. Go, 67’s Go!
On January 16, it’s the hottest culinary party of the year in Taste of the Glebe 2020. Explore the neighbourhood’s best restaurants all under one roof at the Glebe Community Centre. This year is the 21st edition of the popular food & drink show, which is a major fundraiser for GNAG’s Community Development Fund. Tickets are already sold out, but click here for more information.
It’s a fun start to the year. Happy New Year!
