A mountain of events in the Glebe this winter
Winterlude, curling and hockey to keep you moving in the cold
If you’re looking at the calendar, wondering how on earth you are going to get through the next few months of winter and the bitter cold that will likely follow, you need not worry.
Suit up and head to the Glebe, as there are tons of winter activities set to launch that feature everything from snowman building contests, comedy nights, skating and hockey to concerts, snowshoe races and the country’s premier curling championship, the Tim Horton’s Briar.
The fun all starts soon with Snowmania, where the Glebe will try to become the snowman capital of the world. The idea is to get both businesses and residents to build friendly snowmen in their yards and in front of their businesses and post photos of their creation to social media with the hashtag #Snowmania. There will be prizes for best snowman, funniest snowman and the saddest snowman.
Snowmania is a way to show off the Glebe in a unique and fun way – and will give snowman builders some practice before we try to beat the Guinness Book of World Records for most snowmen built in an hour on January 31 with Cracking up the Capital at Lansdowne. Japan stole the record away from us last year and we will need to build at least 2,037 to take back our rightful title. Get practicing!
Start building your snowman now and let’s build a friendly brigade of snow people to show off to the world.
Snowmania leads right into Winterlude, which will bring a slew of fun, snowy activities to the Glebe for much of February.
Ever wanted to learn how to curl? There will be 9 sessions between Jan. 29 and Feb. 14 on both Fridays and Saturdays at the Lansdowne refrigerated outdoor skating rink. Click here for more details.
Travel through time at the Aberdeen Square at the Lansdowne Through the Years outdoor photo exhibit that will display images of the old Lansdowne, through its transition and the amazing park it has become today. The exhibit runs every day of Winterlude from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Think you’ve got what it takes to build the best snow sculpture? Then register your team into the Community Snow Sculpture Contest and win straight up cash if you can wow judges. Create a real or imaginary creature. Only 10 teams will be selected. Click here to apply for a spot.
Cracking up the Capital comedy festival will also host several free and paid comedy shows throughout the Glebe that are suitable for the whole family Feb. 1-3. There will be comedy shows at Fifth Avenue Court and other locations throughout the Glebe. More details to follow. Cracking up the Capital then returns to the Glebe for Comedy Night in Canada on Feb. 6 – the festival finale featuring Big Daddy Tazz, Harry Doupe, Tim Steeves and Jessica Holmes. Click here for more info.
Winterlude in the Glebe will also boast a winter brewfest, a blizzard bowl outdoor football game and snowshoe ultimate Frisbee. Click here for all the details on Winterlude in the Glebe.
Bundle up, there is lots for you to do in the Glebe this winter.
Stay tuned for a more detailed schedule of events later this month.
