We Have a Glebe Spree Early-Bird Prize Winner

A big congratulations goes out to Ryan Hough, a big fan and loyal customer of the Glebe.

Ryan and his family have participated in the contest every year since its inception and now have the winnings to show for their dedication!

When asked where his family will spend their prize, he had some great ideas. McKeen Metro or Nicastros for groceries, Shoe + Shoe and Glebe Trotters for shoe wear, Compact Music to grab some records, Anthony’s, Thanjai and Taj Mahal for a nice bite, and just in time for his family to take up cross country skiing, Kundstadt Sports and Jo Mama Cycling!

“In a holiday season that has been dampened by COVID-19, this has been a bright and exciting part. With prices rising this will help us continue to contribute to local businesses”, says Ryan, who in past years has always made sure to submit 2-6 ballots at our local merchants.

Ryan and his family are Glebe regulars who spend their time visiting some of our special local merchants. Little Victories for a coffee, Kettleman’s for a bagel, Last Train to Delhi for a gourmet meal, and the Unrefined Olive for a wide selection of olive oils.

His ballot was dropped off at Pet Valu. When asked what he purchased for that final winning ballot? “Kitty litter for our cats Kirby and Zelda”. A huge thank you goes out to Kirby and Zelda, the real stars of this year’s Early Bird prize giveaway.

Many thanks as always to our title sponsor, McKeen Metro Glebe.

Glebe Spree runs from November 15-December 31, 2021. Participants get one sticker for every $15 they spend with 10 stickers completing a ballot. Stickers can be collected, and ballots can be dropped off at any participating merchant in the Glebe. Shop local this Holiday season and you could win the grand prize of a $10,000 Glebe shopping spree. Good luck to all!

Glebe Spree is back, baby!

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year…”

The popular neighbourhood contest has become a cherished holiday initiative year after year, as it not only incentivises local shopping, but also boosts economic activity for our merchants. After a year of rebuilding and growth within our community, this beloved contest ends our year and our neighbourhood on a high note.

If you’re new to Glebe Spree, playing – and winning – is simple. Beginning November 15, pick up a Glebe Spree Passport at any participating business and start shopping. For every $15 spent in the Glebe, you will receive a sticker for your passport. Once you’ve collected $150 worth of stickers, submit your completed ballot into any ballot box. Each participating store has its own ballot box. You can enter as many times as you like, so do all your Christmas shopping in the Glebe to increase your chances of winning.

Early shoppers will have a chance to win a $2,500 Early Bird Prize if they enter the contest by December 5 at midnight. All Early Bird ballots will be re-entered into the $10,000 Grand Prize, with a December 31 deadline to be drawn January 14, 2022.

Returning this year is the popular Any Day Prize giveaway that gives shoppers a chance to win a $100 gift card just by walking into a Glebe shop. There are secret times and locations set up throughout the Glebe and if you pop into the right store at the right time – you could win a cool $100.

And if you’re lucky enough to win the Grand Prize $10,000 shopping spree, there’s a lot of places to spend your winnings. Just ask last year’s winner Amin Habib, who submitted the winning ballot at Whole Foods.

Habib says that while he spent most of his winnings on groceries, and how helpful that was this past year, he also enjoyed shopping at Sporting Life, viens avec moi, and Winners! His favourite part of the experience was that it kept him in the Glebe all summer long and gave him an opportunity to experience all that our neighbourhood has to offer. As to whether or not he plans to play and re-enter this year? He “absolutely will!”.

This years Glebe Spree starts November 15 at 8am and runs until December 31 at 11:59pm.

Good luck and Happy Holidays!

Glebe Spree winner crowned with $10K neighbourhood shopping spree

Amin Habib poses with his $10,000 Glebe Spree cheque in the Glebe Tuesday, March 16, 2021

Amin Habib will likely be spending a lot more time in the Glebe this summer.

Why wouldn’t he now that he’s got a cool, crisp 10 grand in his pocket for winning 2020’s Glebe Spree contest. The Metcalfe resident dropped off his ballot at Whole Foods and was shocked to get the call last week that he had won a $10,000 shopping spree in the Glebe.

“I couldn’t believe it, it was amazing,” said Habib while posing with the giant Glebe Spree cheque in the Glebe Tuesday morning. “This money is much needed right now.”

Amin and his wife have been shopping in the Glebe for several years, making the 30-minute drive from Metcalfe to shop for essentials almost weekly. And when they’re here, they always make a day of it, with stops at Sporting Life or Kunstadt Sports for gear, lunch at Feleena’s, Chickpeas or Mad Radish and browsing for new clothing at Viens Avec Moi Boutique.

“If we’re going to get shoes or stuff for our daughter, we are down shopping in the Glebe area,” adds Habib. “It’s one of the best places to come and shop and walk around with all the shops so close together. We will certainly be drawn to the Glebe area a lot more and are excited to be giving back to the local businesses and explore many more stores.”

And for those who didn’t win this year, Habib has some words of wisdom.

“I truly believe that when someone sets their intention to something, it can and will be achieved,” he says. “Wishes do come true when you set your focus and positive mental energy into a specific direction consistently. I wish clarity of mind to everyone who truly wants it.”

While the 2020 version of Glebe Spree had to be adapted to adhere to local health guidelines to keep shoppers, businesses, and their employees safe during the pandemic, that good old Glebe Spree spirit was still felt along Bank Street during the holidays. While an official ballot count is not yet available, the mini mountain of entries proves that Glebe Spree was yet again another successful shop local campaign that not only gave merchants a boost when they needed it the most, but also rewarded their best customers.

“Glebe Spree has grown in popularity virtually every year since its inception and has become a part of neighbourhood holiday shopping experience,” says Glebe BIA Executive Director Andrew Peck. “The underlying purpose of the contest is to encourage local shopping and never before has this message been more important. We are extremely grateful to all our businesses for their ongoing strength and resilience and to all the patrons who support them.”

Now in its ninth year, the numbers show just how much of a benefit Glebe Spree is to small businesses in the Glebe. The contest can be attributed to millions in local spending since its inception. This year’s contest featured 24 Any Day Prizes worth $100 each, a $2,500 early bird-prize won by local Morag MacDonald and the grand prize $10,000 shopping spree – winnings that must be spent within the neighbourhood.

The award-winning promotion would not be possible without the continued support from McKeen Metro Glebe, who has contributed as a main sponsor since the beginning of the contest. The success of Glebe Spree over the years is also due to ongoing support of the Glebe’s merchants, their hard-working staff and their dedicated customers who make the Glebe a great place to shop, work, eat and play.

Congratulations to all of our winners and we will see you out there with your Glebe Spree passports this November.

Return of Glebe Spree highlights need for neighbourhood to ‘buy local’ this season

"Neighbourhood contest kicks off this Sunday!

To say that businesses are having a difficult year would be a understatement.

For the ones that didn’t shutter as a result of COVID-19 pandemic, the year was spent struggling to pay rent; shifting shopping experiences to online models, rebuilding take-out menus and purchasing PPE to restructure indoor shopping for social distancing. It has been a year of uncertainty and the future is muddy at best.

That’s why merchants will be thrilled to see local shoppers out in the neighbourhood with Glebe Spree ballots in hand this holiday season. The community ‘buy local’ campaign launches November 15 and with it your chance to win a $10,000 shopping spree in the Glebe.

With many businesses feeling the impact of the pandemic daily in their shops, restaurants, studios and salons, Glebe Spree has never been as important as it is today. The popular neighbourhood contest has become a cherished holiday initiative year after year, as it not only incentivises local shopping, but also boosts economic activity for our merchants. Nearly $5 million in consumer spending was attributed to the contest last year alone and more than $25 million since its inception.

“Businesses are operating in survival mode and what they need right now more than ever are customers,” says Glebe BIA Executive Director Andrew Peck.  “The Glebe Spree contest encourages people to support our merchants and invest in the local economy.”

You can enter as many times as you like, so do all your Christmas shopping in the Glebe to increase your chances of winning.

Early shoppers will have a chance to win a $2,500 Early Bird Prize if they enter the contest by December 6 at midnight. All Early Bird ballots will be re-entered into the grand-prize draw, to be held January 8, 2021.

Returning this year is the popular Any Day Prize giveaway that gives shoppers a chance to win a $100 gift card every time they walk into a Glebe shop. There are secret times and locations set up throughout the Glebe and if you pop into the right store at the right time – you could win a cool $100.

And if you’re lucky enough to win the grand prize $10,000 shopping spree, there’s a lot of places to spend your winnings. Just ask last year’s winner Daniel Creighton, who submitted just one lucky ballot last year and won the jackpot.

"Creighton spent his winnings on groceries at McKeen Metro Glebe, shoes at Glebetrotters, school textbooks at Octopus Books and dinners out as his “favourite restaurant by far,” Anthony’s Pizza.

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it’s difficult to say what shopping and dining will look like during the holiday season. That’s why it’s so important to support your local businesses so they can stay afloat over the next few critical months.

Order take-out, purchase a gift card, support a Glebe business online or safely in-store. Our merchants have adapted in many ways to ensure the health and safety of their customers. Let’s give back to these dedicated and hard-working business owners who have become the social fabric of our amazing neighbourhoods.

Shop local. Spend local. Save local.

Glebe Spree runs from November 15 to December 31, 2020. For a list of participating businesses and full rules and regulations, visit www.glebespree.ca.

A huge thank you goes out to our title sponsor this year, Mckeen Metro Glebe.

Lucky local cashes in on $10k Glebe Spree grand prize

When Daniel Creighton spotted three Glebe Spree ballots sitting in his car in early January, he thought he had lost his chance to win a $10,000 shopping spree. But because he does most of his shopping in the Glebe, he still had one single ballot in the running.

And when his Glebe Spree ballot was plucked from the massive pile, he couldn’t believe it.

“I had no idea,” said a jubilant Creighton during a cheque presentation Tuesday at Audi City Ottawa. “When I got the call, I thought it was spam and then they sent the documentation and was like, ‘okay, this is real.’”

But before his ballot was pulled, he was getting the gears from his wife at home for forgetting to submit the family’s additional ballots that he’d promised he would drop off before the December 31 deadline. They’re still sitting in the car.

“My wife and my sister in law had ballots that they asked me to put in and I had accidently forgotten to do it, so I was getting a little bit of flack for that,” he added through chuckles.  “But it clearly worked out. Who would have thought?”

The local couple has lived in the Glebe for the past three years and love the butcher, baker, candlestick maker-vibe you get in the neighbourhood. Everything they need is within steps of their home – from clothing and dining options to services and entertainment galore. But what appeals to Creighton most is the level of service you get from Glebe retailers that you won’t get online. His winning ballot was submitted at Glebe Trotters.

“The reason I go to Glebe Trotters is because, obviously they are local and they sell the shoes I want, but I like the service that they provide,” said Creighton. “I could have ordered online, I could have gone to a big store, but I wanted to support the local store.”

With Creighton’s wife returning to school, the prize money couldn’t have come at a better time. It will likely go towards groceries and new textbooks from Octopus Books, but not before he treats friends and family to a few dinners at CRAFT Beer Market, Local Public Eatery and his “favourite by far,” Anthony’s Pizza.

“We live in the Glebe, we spend time and money in the Glebe, so this will obviously go back into the community,” added Creighton. “We love it here.”

This year’s Glebe Spree was the most successful contest to date, with a record 38,000-plus ballots being entered into the contest. Representatives on hand to award the grand prize on Tuesday included Glebe Spree sponsors Rebecca McKeen of McKeen Metro Glebe, Audi City Ottawa Executive Vice President Liza Mrak and Operations Manager Melanie Mock, and Glebe BIA Executive Director Andrew Peck.

“Hearing the stories of the Glebe Spree winners and seeing their excitement is a major highlight for us year after year,” said Glebe BIA Executive Director Andrew Peck. “And seeing it grow in popularity once again is just the icing on the cake.”

In addition to the $10,000 grand prize Glebe shopping spree, this year’s contest also boasted five weekly cash draws of $1,000 and more than 30 Any Day Prize giveaways. Weekly $1,000 winners included Alex Stecky-Efantis, Kelly Kilrea, Darlene Charron, Marjorie McLean and Leila Metcalf. You can read about them here.

The Glebe BIA would like to thank the more than 160 business who participated this year. Thank you also to contest sponsors McKeen Metro Glebe and Audi City Ottawa, and all the businesses who contributed Any Day Prizes.

Finally, a massive thank you goes out to all the loyal customers, who continue to support local businesses and help this contest grow year after year.

Award-winning Glebe Spree turns shoppers into big winners

Alex Stecky-Efantis had no idea that playing trivia at Irene’s Pub could net him $1,000 cash. But after a second-place performance at the local pub, he dropped his Glebe Spree ballot in the box, and it was later drawn as one of five weekly cash winners. Instantly, Stecky-Efantis’ wallet was much thicker.

“The first thing we did was we told our trivia team,” said an elated Stecky-Efantis from his weekly haunt, Irene’s.  He’s hoping to treat his trivia crew for all those witty answers they’ve come up with over the years.

“So next week, we are going to buy them all their dinner and get them drinks and dessert. It’s going to be fun,” he added.  He’s planning on doing it all again on Tuesday, so he gets double his Glebe Spree stickers. But a thousand bucks goes farther than a dinner at a pub. With their first baby on the way, Stecky-Efantis and his wife will surely be making some trips to Mrs. Tiggy Winkle’s for toys or to McKeen Metro Glebe for diapers and groceries.

It’s these kinds of perks that Glebe Spree winners have enjoyed over the years. Since the contest’s inception in 2011, nearly $100,000 has been given away to local shoppers – from the $10,000 grand prize shopping sprees and daily instant-win giveaways to the new $1,000 weekly cash prizes added in 2017. And what makes the contest even more exciting is that all of the winnings are spent in the Glebe, which supports our local businesses. Past winners have spent their prize on family vacations, groceries, dinners out with friends, toys, electronics, clothing, jewellery and self-care – pretty much everything you can think of.

“Glebe Spree has become a cherished neighbourhood tradition that adds to the magical holiday season,” says Glebe BIA Executive Director Andrew Peck. “We are grateful that our community is passionate about shopping locally and Glebe Spree is our way of spreading the holiday cheer.”

The contest has garnered the attention of the International Downtown Association, who awarded Glebe Spree a Pinnacle Award for its success – the highest honour in the industry – as well as the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association, who recognized the contest at their annual awards ceremony in 2018.

But all of this success is thanks to the popularity driven by our customers and the engagement of our local businesses. Walking down Bank Street, it’s hard to miss the decals decorating store windows and the ballot boxes on nearly every counter. And the contest just keeps getting bigger and better each year; the new weekly $1,000 draws are what appealed to winner Kelly Kilrea, who said she rushed to get her ballot in early at Glebe Trotters for the first time.

“I just spent money and realized that it was the start of Glebe Spree and I remembered that there are the weekly draws,” she said. “It was the first time I have ever played early.” Kilrea still has that feeling of “unexpected joy” from winning the prize that she wants to spread that exact feeling around with donations and secret Santa gifts for loved ones.

“I think I will spend quite a bit of it making donations and then some of it for surprise gifts for people who aren’t expecting it,” added Kilrea. Other weekly $1,000 winners this year included Darlene Charron, Marjorie McLean and Leila Metcalf, who is donating half of her winnings to the Ottawa Food Bank.

Part of what has added to the excitement of the contest are the  Any Day Prizes that are awarded almost daily throughout the contest period, where unsuspecting shoppers are surprised with $100 gift cards just for walking in on the right date at the right time. The contest wouldn’t be the same without the support of our local businesses, including our contest sponsors McKeen Metro Glebe and Audi City Ottawa, as well as all those who donated an Any Day Prize. It’s this constant dedication from members, businesses, and customers that makes Glebe Spree possible every year.

Stay tuned for the big winner reveal in January.

Longtime Glebe resident Margaret Vice wins $10K Glebe Spree!

Margaret Vice has been shopping in the Glebe for 45 years – and she’s never won a prize.

That all changed last week when Vice’s ballot was pulled as this year’s Glebe Spree grand-prize winner – and the recipient of a whopping $10,000 shopping spree in the neighbourhood.

“It’s exciting. I was sort of shocked,” said Vice during a cheque presentation at Glebe Spree title sponsor BMO at Lansdowne the Glebe Branch. “I think I was at a dinner party once and won a basket, but that’s it.”

Vice has been playing Glebe Spree since it began eight years ago – not only to win, but to support local business owners in the area who she has been visiting for more than four decades. The longtime Glebe resident loves the butcher-baker-candlestick maker feel that the neighbourhood has – with its unique ma and pa shops, a roster of delicious restaurants and every service you would ever need.

“It really does have that small town vibe and I think people appreciate that,” adds Vice. “Maybe that is why young families are staying and living in the Glebe and wanting that contact. It’s just so comfortable and the merchants are so nice and the whole area just has a special feeling about it. I don’t know if a lot of cities have that.”

While past Glebe Spree winners have had to think long and hard about how to spend their winnings – do I take a trip across the world or save on groceries for the next year? – Vice already knows where the cash is going to go.

“We are going to give some to a local charity that we are close to, and then I am going to share it with relatives and friends who have young children,” said Vice. “These young families, there is so much for them to choose from.”

Now in its eighth year, Glebe Spree is a highly popular contest funded by the merchants of the Glebe that encourages holiday shoppers to support local business. This year was the most successful contest to date, with more than 33,000 entries being submitted, representing a six per cent increase over last year’s previous record.

“Glebe Spree is a promotion designed to add an extra level of excitement to the shopping experience during the holidays,” said Glebe BIA Executive Director Andrew Peck. “And for Margaret, the Glebe Spree grand prize is the gift that will keep on giving.”

This year’s contest also featured 30 daily giveaways and five $1,000 cash prizes that were awarded throughout the contest. The Glebe BIA would like to thank the more than 160 business who participated this year. In particular, we would like to thank our title sponsors, McKeen Metro Glebe and the Bank of Montreal, and the 30 businesses who contributed Any Day Prizes.

Glebe Spree $1,000 winners set to spend free cash in the Glebe

There aren’t many better ways to get to know a neighbourhood than to spend $1,000 of free cash at local shops.

Lorraine Henault is finding that out after winning one of our Glebe Spree $1,000 weekly prizes after purchasing new spectacles at Optical Excellence. It was her first time playing Glebe Spree and she struck big with $1,000 to spend in the Glebe. Although she isn’t familiar with many of the Glebe shops, she doesn’t think it will be difficult finding nice things to buy for her and her hubby.

"“That’s not going to be too hard,” she said through a chuckle.

“I am just going to take a nice day and walk the stores and look around and something might just come to my mind.”

Henault was tipped off about the contest by a friend while shopping at Escape Clothing, and she’s certain now that she will be returning to the Glebe every holiday season to stock up on Christmas gifts. She couldn’t believe the news when she was alerted that she had won $1,000.

“I was very surprised,” she added.

"“We thought at first it was a scam.”

Corina Curran was also shocked to get the winning phone call – and the loyal Glebe Spree shopper was thrilled when reality sunk in.

“I was so surprised to win, I’ve never won anything,” said Curran, alongside her young daughter at Shoppers Drug Mart, where she entered her winning ballot.

Curran has been a loyal local shopper for years and said the money will be spent at an array of shops throughout the Glebe – everything from pampering herself to treating her daughter to toys at Mrs. Tiggy Winkle’s.

“It’s very exciting,” she says.

“We will be at the toy shop of course, I am going to buy some nice perfumes at Shoppers Drug Mart to treat myself, maybe something nice at Magpie Jewellery, or something nice at a beauty salon and maybe a sweater for my husband at Sporting Life. Everybody is going to get something.”

Todd Snelgrove likes eating out – and he will be treating his wife to delicious grub throughout the Glebe with his winnings. What doesn’t get spent on indulgent nights out will be spent on groceries at Loblaws, where Snelgrove entered his ballot.

“We eat almost every day,” he joked.

“I know my wife likes Joey, so we will be hitting up Joey, and I love the Indian food restaurant, the Taj Mahal. We go out to restaurants once in a while, but we will probably be going a bit more.”

Snelgrove said the $1,000 winnings come at the perfect time during typically expensive holidays.

“It’s awesome,” adds Snelgrove. “It’s fantastic, it’s a really nice Christmas surprise.”

Kim Aiello also won $1,000 and will treat her family to a number of activities over the holidays.

There’s just one draw left for Glebe Spree, and it’s the big, $10,000 shopping spree, so get your ballots in before Jan. 1 for a shot at winning the big prize.

We would like to send out a huge thank you to our sponsors, Mckeen Metro Glebe and BMO Lansdowne Branch, as well as the 30-plus businesses who donated an instant-win prize for this year’s promotion.

Get shopping, Glebe Spree ends Dec. 31 at midnight. Good luck!

Glebe Spree is back in the Glebe!

Nadine Hodgson is getting to know the Glebe really well.

Store by store, restaurant by restaurant, event to event.

The Centretown resident hasn’t been shy about spreading her Glebe Spree winnings across the neighbourhood – making indulging stops at restaurants, shops and recurring visits with her two young children to Mrs. Tiggy Winkle’s.

“I have been trying to make purchases that are a little bit more meaningful and sort of spreading it across the businesses,” says Hodgson, sipping coffee at Little Victories Coffee – coffee she paid for with her leftover Glebe Spree winnings.

“We shop here all the time, but I want to experience different stores too that I haven’t been to.”

Hodgson and her family won last year’s grand prize $10,000 shopping spree – and while that news would be significant for anyone, it was extra special for the Hodgsons.

Just days before learning they had won, Hodgson and her husband Andrew were practically living at CHEO, as their newborn daughter Siena had just undergone an emergency operation. The two-week “emotional rollercoaster” they were on finally came to a halt, and they disembarked to a $10,000 cheque waiting for them when they got home. The money made it possible for Nadine to take extra time off with her now-healthy daughter.

“It was just this horrible experience to go through,” she says of her time at CHEO, not knowing when they would be able to return home with a healthy newborn.

“And then I got this email that we had won. It was fantastic news. It was just this huge uplifting experience.”

The Glebe Spree cash kickstarted a perfect year for the Hodgsons. They took friends out to dinner at The Rowan and The Works, bought their son Theo new ski gear from Sporting Life and even let him pick out his own back-to-school gear at Readi Set Go.

“We went to Readi Set Go and got him everything for back to school. We let him pick whatever he wanted,” says Nadine, adding that he chose a sparkly lunch kit, a police car backpack and a water bottle that can take him to the moon and back.

“Everything he picked himself, and he still loves it, even his water bottle. He says it looks like a spaceship.”

With over half of the winnings still left to spend, Nadine said there will likely be a few more trips to Mrs. Tiggy Winkle’s for Christmas gifts, some fancy holiday dinners with friends and one signature gift that “will stay with the family forever.”

She’ll certainly be playing Glebe Spree again when the neighbourhood’s favourite promotion launches November 15. With the popularity of last year’s Canada 150 edition of Glebe Spree, several elements of the contest will be returning this year – including the weekly $1,000 cash prizes and the ever-popular Any Day Prizes.

Shoppers will only need to spend a total of $150 for a complete entry, while Two-Stamp Tuesdays and Christmas Chaos will once again offer shoppers the chance to get double the stickers every Tuesday and through the entire weekend of December 8-9th.

“Last year’s Glebe Spree was the most successful to date and was recognized with a Pinnacle Award from the International Downtown Association this past October,” says Glebe BIA Executive Director Andrew Peck. “It’s a great way to kick-off the holiday season in the Glebe and we are thrilled to launch the eighth year of this great promotion.”

If you’ve never played Glebe Spree before, it’s as easy as simply shopping in the Glebe. Pick up your Glebe Spree Passport at any participating merchant or online at www.glebespree.ca and bring it with you each time you shop. For every $15 spent, you will receive a sticker for your passport. Collect $150 worth of stickers and drop your ballot off at any participating business, and you’re in. Shoppers can enter the contest as many times as they like to increase their chances of winning.

In addition to the $10,000 grand prize, there will also be five weekly cash prizes worth $1,000. Submit your completed ballots by end of day Tuesday each week and you’ll be entered into the weekly draw. Ballots roll-over each week, so start shopping early to maximize your chances of winning! Shoppers could also win one of 30 Any Day Prizes consisting of a $100 gift card on any given day just by walking into a Glebe store. The stores and times are kept secret, so you’ll just have to keep shopping for your chance to win.

Glebe Spree launches Nov. 15 and runs through Christmas until Dec. 31. The winner will be announced in early January. Visit www.glebespree.ca on Nov. 15 for full contest rules.
